Experts urge less focus on antioxidants, more on variety

You know, oregano that packs 42 times more antioxidants than apples, cooked tomatoes that may prevent prostate cancer, and chocolate and wine that may or may not be health foods?

Then here's the good news -- you can stop trying.

Leading researchers say all those breathless headlines, food packaging claims and seemingly contradictory studies about what antioxidants can and can't do have fostered a faulty silver bullet mind-set that can hinder health more than help.

Instead, experts advise focusing on balance, moderation and variety, and leaving the phytochemicals, flavanols and phenolic acids to scientists.

Barca pursuit of Henry riles Wenger

Submitted by david on Sat, 2005-12-24 04:32.

Arsene Wenger has reacted angrily to Barcelona's public pursuit of Thierry Henry and has threatened to report the Spanish champion for its behaviour in trying to lure his captain.

Senior Barcelona figures have made no secret of their desire to capture Henry at season's end, with the president, Joan Laporta, publicly confirming this week that he will try to sign the striker.

Wenger said no one from the club had been in touch to discuss a transfer and he is concerned that Barcelona is carrying out a destabilising campaign against the rules.

"I'm worried about it," Wenger said. "If they want to sign him, all they have to do is call us up because he has one year left on his contract. I hope to do something about it because it's unfair and insulting. It shows a lack of respect. I don't care who you are in football - if you are from Barcelona or Doncaster, you have to respect the rules."

Cricket great urges swift action on racism

WEST Indies great Sir Viv Richards has called on the International Cricket Council and FIFA to move more swiftly to rid sports of racism.

"This matter of black players being subjected to abuse must be urgently addressed by the people who are in charge - the footballing (soccer) body, the cricketing body," Richards said on Friday.

"There must be plain-clothed officers placed in the crowd, and when you hear that first remark an example must be made of the perpetrator and it must be done swift and quick. I believe the governing bodies have been sitting around for too long."

He was reacting to recent incidents on the international sporting stage. During this week's first cricket Test between Australia and South Africa in Perth, fans racially abused the South Africans.
